History
Gijón Marina, known among locals as El Muelle, is considered one of the best port infrastructures from the 20th century. As written by the illustrious G. M. Jovellanos in 1804, ‘the works of the new port are among the best in Spain for their beauty, solidity and comfort’.
For more information on our history, please visit the Port of Gijón website.
The history of our port is linked to the growth of our region and the search for a way to export coal and coking coal from the mining basins of Asturias to the rest of the world. In the 1960s our port became a fishing port, then a marina in the 1980s when the first jetties were installed. So it remained until 2005, when it began to be managed directly by the Port Authority. In that year, as did the rest of Port Authorities in Spain, Gijón decided to grant a concession for the nautical sports facilities located on port land.
Since 1 January 2006, the Marina of Gijón has remained an administrative concession of the Port Authority of Gijón, managed by a private company for a period of 25 years.
During these years of management, the marina has changed in response to demand. Jetties have been modified to accommodate longer boats and catamarans, especially to facilitate transit. Five floating platforms have been installed to facilitate water sports such as jet skiing, paddle surfing and diving.
